This site was birthed as a blog on tumblr.; deciding that tumblr. was no longer the place for it, owing to a miserly number of page views and an increasingly nuanced perception of the positives and negatives of the tumblr. network, I have established it here instead. The first group of posts will involve me essentially moving across everything pertinent.
The ideas supporting amsterdamarm, the purposes behind it, fall into three interlinked categories. This site should provide a concise but detailed guide to culture in Amsterdam – to the music venues, popular, classical and jazz; the cinemas; the galleries and museums; restaurants, bars and cafés; and also, in the coming weeks, to the shops related to these arts and venues. Those guides will be maintained and updated via the pages linked above. It will then serve for me to essentially depict some of my life and some of life in general in Amsterdam, through photographs, pictures, videos, news, recapitulations of events, reviews of exhibitions and restaurants, forebodings of things to come, excitements, throwaway thoughts, and so on. In this the site here will hope to complement my site at culturedallroundman.com, and its linked tumblr. accounts.
Culturedallroundman involves extended pieces on a range of cultural topics: music, literature, cinema, art, current affairs, sport, food, and style. The endeavour is to discuss and analyse in detail the broad range of my interests, deliberately eschewing the specialist tendency of so much of the internet, and of society taken as a generalised whole. Recent articles have featured the poet Alexander Blok; those garments on display at the 2013 Oscars; the figure of Pierrot and his extension across the arts; a recipe for carrot and pea risotto; and the Jesuits, Ignatius Loyola and James Joyce. Extended articles on Amsterdam exhibitions and restaurants will continue to be published there and linked here, and I also post there occasional photo series; this site will be more comprehensive and regular in its focus on Amsterdam.
So in short, this will be a blog concerning Amsterdam, with an adjoined guide to its cultural venues and events.
